Who we are

Protecting communities, transforming lives

Pupa Advisory Initiative is a Ugandan not-for-profit. We protect households and strengthen communities against life's shocks. Millions of families live one illness, death or failed harvest away from hardship, yet almost none are protected. We exist to change that.

Our story

Founded by people who saw the gap

Pupa began with former insurance professionals who had seen, from the inside, why protection rarely reaches those who need it most. Coverage in Uganda has sat near 1% for over a decade, while 80% of the workforce earns in the informal economy with no safety net.

The products on offer were built for salaried, urban earners, not the farmers, traders and savings groups who carry the greatest risk. So the founders chose a different path.

Why "Pupa"

The stage of quiet transformation

The pupa is the sheltered, in-between stage of a butterfly’s life, the quiet phase where real transformation happens before anything new can take flight. We chose the name because it reflects our work: patient, protective groundwork that helps households and communities change their future.

Protection is rarely dramatic. It is a savings group that holds together during illness, a failed season that does not force a family to sell what it owns, and a shock absorbed without undoing years of progress. We advocate, advise and build so this resilience becomes ordinary, community-owned and lasting. We do not sell.

Our vision

No family faces hardship alone

A Uganda where every household, however modest its income, can withstand life's shocks and build a secure and sustainable future. Not relief that arrives after disaster, but protection that communities own and can rely on before it strikes.

Our mission

Advancing mutual protection and resilience

To advance mutual protection, community empowerment and financial resilience for underserved Ugandan households: by advocating for mutuality, building trusted partnerships, and helping communities create and own the protection that keeps families out of poverty.

What we stand for

Five values guide every decision

Mutuality

People are stronger together. We help communities pool risk and protect one another.

Community first

The communities we serve are our partners and co-owners, never just a market.

Integrity

We advise honestly and openly, and earn trust before we ask for it.

Empowerment

We build knowledge and capacity so communities can protect themselves.

Transformation

We measure success by the lasting change we create in households.
